Sacred Heart of Jesus School was selected to be part of a pioneer program for the new classroom app, Google Expedition. Representatives from Google, who are travelling to various schools around the world, visited Sacred Heart on Monday, January 4, 2016, to observe feedback from both students and teachers. Students used Google cardboard goggles, powered by a smartphone to follow a teacher-controlled virtual fieldtrip to such places as outer space, the ocean floor, many U.S. monuments and national parks, just to name a few. Teachers see this as another tool to make learning come to life. Science teacher, Mrs. Christine McMillan greeted her afternoon class stating, “We can’t go to the Coral Reef today, as much as I would like to, but we can go on an expedition in our classroom.” Reactions from students were overwhelmingly posit
ive, with phrases like, “I want to learn more,” and “I feel like I’m swimming right next to the Coral Reef.” Principal Bill Adams said, “It’s an exciting learning opportunity for our students. It took them to various parts of the world and throughout history without leaving the classroom.”
